LTA: Kindergarten Literacy Through The Arts

In this Literacy Through the Arts unit, in each video students will be introduced to a new book with an interactive reading. Then they will write sentences, make illustrations about themselves in the style of each book, and do movement activities and warm ups throughout!

Materials needed to make your book: Paper & Materials to write Markers or crayons to draw and color with OR a pre-mede bound book to create your book from Part 1's interactive reading is ‘I Like Myself’ by Karen Baumont. Mélissa Smith has been a Teaching Artist with Arts For All since the Fall of 2010. She has taught and facilitated workshops in improvisation, dance, creative writing and theatre techniques to a variety of ages. Mélissa earned her BA in Theatre with a minor in dance and creative writing in 2007 from Palm Beach Atlantic University. She is a multi-disciplinary Theater Maker and performer as well as an Author! Arts education was the saving grace of her grade school years, and she is passionately dedicated to giving similar opportunities to our future leaders and culture shapers. Literacy Through the Arts builds students’ reading, writing and verbal expression skills through a multi-arts curriculum in theater, literature, music, visual arts and dance. Through art, K-2 students develop critical and creative thinking and a vocabulary to express ideas, stories and emotions. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the city council.
